Our Children's Director... Emily Maska!
Emily Maska, an experienced mover, relocated multiple times during her school years, graduating from Ramstein
American High School in Germany in 1993. Emily obtained her Bachelor of Music Therapy from
Loyola University in New Orleans in 1999. From 1999 to 2005, as a board certified music therapist, Emily provided child and adolescent psychology services at both River Oaks
Psychiatric Hospital in New Orleans and Season’s Grief
Center in Metairie, while also performing as a professional violinist throughout the Gulf South.
Emily and her husband Tony lost their home and all possessions in the Hurricane Katrina flooding in 2005, and upon returning to Louisiana, decided to reside in Hammond. Emily then enrolled in Tulane University, obtaining her Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology in four years, while also giving birth to her two children, Maddie and Grant. Emily has taught biochemistry at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, as well as molecular biology, microbiology and comparative anatomy in Southeastern's "Upward Bound" program for high school students.
While fully intending to pursue a scientific career, particularly in molecular research, Emily realized that God was using all of these experiences to prepare her heart and mind to be a stay-at-home mom and educate her own children. Emily delights in teaching young ones about Jesus, is passionate about the well-being of children, and is dedicated to the Children’s Ministry at FUMC Hammond.
FUMC Hammond currently has a volunteer based children's church. Children's church is available for any child starting at age 3 through the 5th grade. We invite all the children to come to their own special church after offertory in both services. This allows your child to enjoy 'grown up' worship but also allows them to grow spiritually at their level. Children who participate in this worship often have a bible story and a fun activity such as a craft. We encourage parents to discuss the activities and lessons with their children so they may have a variety of view points and grow in their knowledge and faith. During Sunday School hour, we encourage children to attend Children Creating for Christ. They met in the sanctuary, here, the children sing songs and dance. They then go to the preschool building for a short lesson and a craft.
